A record of sorts by Port Trust

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Chennai Port Trust on Monday set a new record in iron ore lumps handling when 40,300 tonnes of the material were loaded onto a ship bound for China.

According to a press release, the record achieved at the port's Jawahar Dock II by manual operation surpassed the previous record of 38,900 tonnes on August 2. The iron ore lumps are dust-free and the norms were followed to check pollution while handling them. The entire 50,800 tonne consignment handling was completed within 41 hours. While Gimpex is the exporter of the consignment, B.L. Transport is the stevedore. Compass Shipping is the agent for the vessel `m.v. Ince Inebolu.'

In the current financial year, Chennai Port Trust had handled 2.18 million tonne of iron ore lumps and pallets by manual operation at the Jawahar Dock, the release said.
