"We will not give up our land"
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM:
"Take our houses. Take our land. Take whatever you want, but after bulldozing us." When S. Viswanathan, an ex-serviceman, made this remark, he was echoing the sentiments of all his neighbours and the other residents of Pozhichalur.
A large portion of the area has been identified for land acquisition to make way for the modernization of the Chennai airport. Though most of the newly developed localities of this panchayat have come up in the past couple of decades, residents say Pozhichalur finds place in history. Residents said Pozhichalur was originally called `Pugazh Chola Nallur' and the Agastheeswarar Temple was more than 800 years old. Displacing thousands in the name of development would be grossly unjust, they said.
As news about the inclusion of their locality in land acquisition spread, residents joined the demonstration in droves.
