Three community welfare centres opened
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Three community health and welfare shelters for tsunami-affected people were inaugurated on Wednesday at Meyyur Kuppam, Aali Kuppam and Kottivakkam Kuppam in the coastal area of Kancheepuram district.
The shelters have come up with a grant of Rs. 24.27 lakhs from the Direct Relief International of the United States of America. The Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, contributed Rs. 1.10 crores for the project. The money was spent on building the shelter, furniture for schools, boats and nets for fishermen and conducting free medical camps on every Saturday since the tsunami struck in December 2004.
Susan Fowler, senior programme officer and Seshadri Iyer, country co-ordinator, participated.
D.K. Srinivasan, secretary of the hospital, was also present.
