Bangalore: The SSLC examination began all over the State on Thursday. Altogether 8.35 lakh candidates are taking the examinations in 1,329 centres.

The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has introduced a new format this time. All the papers have multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

Kempaiah, Block Education Officer, South Range 2, said the new system will work. "It will work because students can manage the time taken to answer the paper and also it is easy to score," he said.

He said that since there are 12 versions of the papers this year, the number of malpractices will come down.

"Mass copying will be a thing of the past. Under the new system, no two students in a row will have the same version of the question paper. A few schools have been identified as sensitive and the squads are keeping a watch on the conduct of the examination there," he said.

Secretary (Primary and Secondary Education) T.M. Vijay Bhaskar told The Hindu that the first day of the examination went off smoothly all over the State, expect in Gudur in Bagalkot district.

"The examination was cancelled there. A re-examination will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m.," Director (Examinations) of KSEEB, T.M. Kumar said.

A boy was sent to the wrong examination centre by his school headmaster in Bangalore. After the invigilators found that he had come to the wrong centre, they contacted the headmaster. Mr. Kempaiah contacted Mr. Kumar who directed the invigilators to allow the boy to write the examination. "His question paper-cum-answer booklet will be sent in a parcel to his centre and the boy will be given extra time to make up for the lost time," he said.
