Plea for food policy

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Civil Supplies Officers' Association has highlighted the need for a State policy on food and public distribution.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, association general secretary M. Sasidharan Nair called on the Government to ensure adequate buffer stocks of food grains and essential items in ration shops. He said the Government should introduce universal rationing, with all ration cardholders entitled to a monthly quota of 20 kg of rice at Rs.5 a kg.

Mr. Sasidharan Nair demanded that ration sugar be made available to all cardholders. This, he said, would help hold the price of sugar in the open market. He stressed the need to encourage paddy cultivation, procure rice and distribute it through the Maveli store network.
