Thiruvananthapuram: A tense situation prevailed in front of the AKG Centre, on Thursday, when nearly 50 youth marched past the building shouting slogans in support of Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan.

The demonstrators, suspected to be Students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists, set out from Students Centre near PMG Junction around 6.45 p.m. The youth were carrying flags of both the organisations and shouting slogans in support of the CPI(M).

The police threw a cordon in front of the AKG Centre to prevent any untoward incident. CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and other leaders, including Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and M.A. Baby, were inside the AKG Centre at the time.

The media were present in strength outside the AKG Centre. The police cordon was withdrawn on the demand of some local CPI(M) leaders. The demonstration ended at the official residence of Mr. Achuthanandan.

SFI statement

The State committee of the Students Federation of India (SFI) has said that no activist of the organisation was part of the group that marched past the AKG Centre. In a press release here, the SFI said that the group had carried the organisation's flag without authorisation.
