KOCHI: A strike by a section of employees of the Cochin Port Trust, which started on Thursday, affected vessel movement. The port authorities enlisted the help of Navy personnel to help in the movement of ships. The strike has not affected cargo movement, said an official of the Cochin Port Trust here. Only a section of the employees was on strike and it would not affect the operations of the port seriously, he added. The Cochin Port Staff Association said here in a press release that it had launched the strike against what it described as the port trust authorities' denial of trade union rights.
Suspension
The association said the strike was also against the suspension of its general secretary, and alleged that its billboards and posters were destroyed and it was denied the right to use loudspeakers at meetings despite permission from the police. The association also alleged that the port trust officials were not maintaining a cordial relationship with the workers and the trust failed to respect labour laws. In a separate press release, the Cochin Port Employees' Organisation alleged that the trust chairman's attitude was dictatorial and trade union rights were denied to the employees. General Secretary of the organisation C.M. Chandra Bose said in the release that employees had been warned against taking part in trade union activities. A protest rally and a meeting were held on Thursday on the port premises, the release said. The organisation also extended moral support to the striking employees.
