Give priority to street children in development projects: jurist

Sneha Bhavans to eliminate begging by children opened

KOCHI: Children who are struggling to make a living in the streets or being exploited should be given priority while taking up development projects, said V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge.

He was delivering the keynote address at the State-level inauguration of Sneha Bhavans of Janaseva Sisubhavan, aimed at eliminating begging by children, on the Durbar Hall Grounds here on Thursday.

Mr. Krishna Iyer said efforts would be made to draw the attention of the President and the Prime Minister towards the issue of begging by children.

K.J. Jesudas, singer, who inaugurated the Sneha Bhavans, said only those who made real efforts for development should be elected in the Assembly polls, which should not be conducted strictly on party basis.

Temporary shelter

The plan is to establish Sneha Bhavans to give temporary shelter to 10 street children each as part of their rehabilitation. People have been requested to sponsor Sneha Bhavans or donate houses for setting them up.

Temporary shelters for street children have been arranged in the districts of Thrissur, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram. The Sisubhavan plans to have Sneha Bhavans in all districts.

Jose Maveli, president of Janaseva Sisubhavan, presided over the function. Kaviyoor Ponnamma, actor; M.K. Sanoo, literary critic; K.G. Marcos and Biju Narayanan, singers; C.M. Yoshith, Deputy Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department; and Charlie Paul, State legal advisor of the Sisubhavan, spoke.

Dr. Jesudas released a music album cut by the Sisubhavan by handing over the first copy to Ms. Ponnamma.

Children at the Sisubhavan presented various cultural programmes.
