No clues in double murder case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police have prima facie ruled out the involvement of the two men they were questioning in connection with the murder of the mother-daughter duo, Swarna Mahajan and Anuratha Mahajan, who were found dead in their Siddhartha Enclave house in South Delhi this past Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anil Shukla said investigations so far have not brought out anything concrete to suggest that they had anything to do with the incident. He added that the two were questioned about their movement but they were not detained.

While Chanakya Verma, one of the persons to visit the house of 48-year-old Ms. Anuratha, a Delhi High Court lawyer, had apparently gone their in connection with some work, the police have not yet revealed the purpose of the visit of Deepak, the second person to have met Ms. Anuratha on Saturday evening. Ms. Anuratha was last seen alive when she entered the colony in the Maruti car of Deepak just before 10 p.m. Her body, along with that of her mother, was discovered next morning.

The police were earlier working on the property dispute angle but have not been able to lay their hands on any substantive evidence on those lines too.

Police sources said investigations may now focus on finding out if anyone else visited Mahajans' house after the second visitor left around 10 p.m. And since the entry seemed friendly, there was a possibility of the visitor being known to the victims, they said. Also, since both women were lawyers it was likely that both knew a large number of people.

Life term for attempt to murder

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for attempting to kill his sister and brother-in-law with a country-made revolver six years ago. Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on accused Manoj Gupta under the Arms Act, for being in possession of an unlicensed pistol. The incident occured soon after Manoj's sister Usha married one Pawan Gupta, in June 2000, despite vehement protests from her family. Later that month, Pawan came to visit his wife at her Govind Puri home in south Delhi, when her parents were away. On spotting the two in conversation in the room, the accused sneaked into the verandah, from where he shot at his sister. Manoj's bullet caught Usha in the chest, after which Pawan attempted to wrest the pistol out of Manoj's hands.

In the scuffle that followed, the accused also shot Pawan on his thigh.

Both the injured were rushed to hospital, and an FIR was later registered with the Kalkaji Police.

Two workers buried alive

NEW DELHI: Two labourers were allegedly buried alive while digging a canal in Rajorkari on Thursday evening. While the police were unable to confirm the number of dead, the fire services that were rushed to the spot claim that two labourers were rushed to a hospital in Haryana.

Two held for auto thefts

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly stealing vehicles.

According to the police, the accused were arrested at Gokulpuri on Wednesday during routine checking. The motorcycle they were riding on had been stolen from Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi, the police said, adding that the vehicle has been seized.
