NEW DELHI: Observing that infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir has come down significantly largely due to the fence erected on the border, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Friday expressed confidence that the remaining work of border fencing on both eastern and western sectors will be completed within a year's time. Addressing a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Home Ministry, Mr. Patil said it was essential to expeditiously complete the fencing work in other areas as well. The Consultative Committee took stock of the progress of border fencing with Pakistan and Bangladesh and also deliberated upon several issues related to border managements. The Home Minister emphasised the need to strengthen the Border Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Assam Rifles by providing them with more men, modern equipment and intelligence support.
Centre-States coordination
Favouring construction of more security posts and a road along the porous Indo-Nepal border to ensure effective patrolling, Mr. Patil stressed the need for proper coordination and cooperation between the Centre and the States in the border-management task. He said the Centre was also taking steps to strengthen coastal security by giving funds to the States for construction of police stations near the coastline and also for acquiring speed boats and modern equipment.
