Mr.Sivasubramaniam said the field of application of rare earths had been widening. Apart from conventional usage in petroleum cracking, glass polishing and metallurgical applications, the material was being used in technologies for fuel cells.

The Chinese domination in the rare earths market had affected the prospects of the Indian rare earths sector.

The situation had changed and the IRE would emerge as a dominant player in national and international markets.

L. N. Maharana, Chief General Manager, Rare Earths Division, Udyogamandal, and representatives of officers' associations and trade unions spoke.
