Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi filed his papers from Titabor constituency in upper Assam's Jorhat district on Friday, the last date to file nominations for the first phase of Assembly polls in 65 constituencies in the State on April 3. He filed four sets of nomination papers, two each in English and Assamese. After submitting his nomination papers, the Chief Minister headed for an election meeting at Dekajan area along the Assam-Nagaland border. Prominent among those filed their papers on Friday were former Union Minister and senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Birendra Prasad Baishya from Guwahati East constituency and former Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bijoya Chakrabarty from Dispur. Former AGP Minister and one of the signatories of the Assam Accord, Biraj Kumar Sharma, who resigned from the party on Thursday after being denied a party ticket, filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from Guwahati East constituency. The AGP made a last-minute change in its candidate for Jalukbari constituency after the condition of former Assam Home Minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan turned critical. The AGP nominated Pushpa Deka as his substitute. Earlier, AGP chief Brindaban Goswami said the party would nominate Mr. Phukan from Jalukbari constituency despite his illness and arrangements were made to file his nomination papers in absentia. Mr. Phukan floated the Natun Asom Gana Parishad (NAGP) along with Mr. Goswami.
