Staff Reporter

Seek three-month ban on trawling

KOLLAM: The Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation has warned against implementing a total seasonal ban on fishing.

In a statement here secretary of the federation A. Andrews said that such a ban will in no way help conserve the marine wealth.

He called upon the State Government to drop all moves aimed at imposing a total ban on fishing.

He pointed out that lakhs of fishing community members depend upon fishing for their daily bread.

The federation demands a three-month ban on trawling during the monsoon season. During the period, nets such as ring sienne and traditional crafts equipped with inboard engines should be banned.

Traditional fishermen using 9 HP out board engines and kattamarams should be allowed to fish without imposing any ban on them.

If the Government goes ahead with implementing a total ban, the traditional fishermen will organise strong agitations against it, the Federation secretary warned.
