CPI(M) firm on ration cards, housing schemes

Party to launch agitational programmes from tomorrow

  • CPI(M) taking to the streets as the Congress `fails to keep its promises'
  • Government charged with undermining public distribution system
  • Party activists and sympathisers will be mobilised in a big way

VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will launch a 10-day agitation campaign to bring pressure on the Government to launch housing schemes and issue ration cards for the poor.

CPI(M) city secretary R. Raghu said on Friday that the party was launching the agitation as the Congress party had not fulfilled the promises it made at the time of elections.

The party agreed to regularise Government land encroached by the poor but it failed to do so.

    Issue of pattas

The Government also promised to regularise Government land encroached before December 1999 and issue `pattas' for it.

However, when the Left parties raised the issue, the deadline was extended to 2006-end, he said.

The Government constituted a high power, three-member committee that included Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao, to take a decision on distribution of `pattas' to those who encroached land, but nothing had come out of it, Mr. Raghu alleged.

Charging the Government with trying to undermine the public distribution system, he said the focus of the agitation would be on the failure to issue ration cards.

    Padayatra to be taken out

Padayatras would be taken out between March 19 and 22 to evaluate the ground situation. This would be followed by a door-to-door signature campaign.

Relay hunger strikes would also be launched in all the 50 divisions in the city after the padayatras, Mr. Raghu said.

A dharna would be staged in front of the Vijayawada urban mandal revenue office on March 29.

Party activists and sympathisers would be mobilised in a big way for the demonstration, Mr. Raghu said.
