Sub-inspector dies in road accident

TAMBARAM: A sub-inspector attached to the Crime Wing of the Madhavaram station died when he fell down from his motorcycle on Grand Southern Trunk Road near the Meenambakkam airport on Friday morning.

The police said Siva Prakasam (54), a resident of Tamil Nadu Housing Board Colony in Tambaram Sanatorium, suddenly applied the brakes and swerved to the left to avoid hitting a cow that was crossing the road. In the impact, he lost control of the vehicle and his head dashed against the median. Though he was wearing a helmet, it was reported that he had not strapped it up properly. He sustained bleeding injuries and was rushed to the Chromepet Government Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The Tambaram police are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Tight security in Erode

ERODE: More than 2,000 policemen and 100 police officials have been pressed into service for the Hindu Community Protection State Conference, to be held on the Chikkiah Naicker College grounds, Sathyamangalam main road, here on March 18 and 19. Vishwa Hindu Parishad International president Ashok Singhal and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh president K.S. Sudarshan are participating.

Superintendent of Police P. Nagarajan told presspersons here on Friday that they had intensified vehicle-checking and night patrol on Sathyamangalam main road. Suspected persons would be secured immediately. — Staff Reporter

Heavy rain in Nagercoil

Nagercoil: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed various parts of Kanyakumari district on Friday.

One person was struck dead by lightning. According to police sources, Raja (23) of Paramarthalingpuram, near Vetturnimadam, took shelter in a passenger's canopy, when the lightning struck him. He died on way to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital. The police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Reporter

INTUC bar on convening meet

CHENNAI: The central unit of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has restrained P.L. Subbiah and G. Kalan, president and general secretary respectively of the INTUC Tamil Nadu unit from convening a meeting of the general council on March 24.

In a letter dated March 16 to State office-bearers, the central unit said that in view of the latest developments, they were asked not to convene any meeting till such time the matter was sorted out. A few days ago the State unit led by Mr. Subbiah and Mr. Kalan entered into an alliance with the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the Assembly elections and it was allotted two seats. This was opposed by the central unit, which said that the State unit had no power to enter into any alliance with any party other than the Congress. They were asked to give an explanation.

However, the state officers contented that the decision to align with the AIADMK was taken at a general council meeting. As it was a majority decision there was no question of withdrawing the action, they added. — Special Correspondent

Nursing degree results released

CHENNAI: The results of the B.Sc (Nursing)-VIII semester degree course examinations of the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University held in February 2006 have been posted on the university's website, www.tnmmu.ac.in, according to a press release issued here. — Special Correspondent

Rain lashes Tuticorin district

Tuticorin : After a gap of two days, rain lashed Tuticorin district on Thursday night and Friday.

According to Disaster Managenment and Mitigation Department sources, 19 rain gauge stations recorded a total of 162.6 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Friday. Following is the amount of rainfall recorded at various places (in mm): Vilathikulam - 2; Ottapidaram - 8; Kadambur- 16; Kovilpatti - 12; Kayathar - 5; Vyppar - 27; Kazhugamalai - 8.2; Maniyachi - 3; Vedanatham - 53; Ettayapuram - 14 and Tuticorin-14.4.

Miraculous escape

Nagercoil : Three persons had a miraculous escape after a sand-laden lorry plunged into a channel near Thovalai on Friday.

According to the police, the mishap occurred when a front tyre of the lorry deflated near Thovalai and it overturned into a roadside channel. Three persons, including the driver, Sekar (28) of Kutticadu, Appukuttan (47) of Kulappuram and Vinodh Kumar (28) of Marthandam, were retrieved from the sand by the villagers.

The police have registered a case.

Passenger injured as bus rams into house

Tuticorin : One person was injured when a public transport bus plying between Tiruchendur and Tirunelveli lost control and rammed into a house at Tiruchendur on Thursday. The injured was G Sounderajan (53), a passenger in the bus. The police said bus driver lost control over the steering wheel when he applied sudden brakes to avoid hitting a herd of stray cattle, which eventually led to the accident. The police have registered a case.

Two arrested on assault charge

Tuticorin : The police on Thursday arrested Enkannan (50) and Kannan (28) on a charge of assaulting N Williams (35) at Masarpatti on Wednesday.

The police said the complainant was assaulted when he questioned the indecent behaviour of the accused with his wife, Selvarani. Subsequently, the accused attacked him with sticks and inflicted injuries on him. The injured was later admitted to Vilathikulam Government Hospital.

Coolie commits suicide

Nagercoil : A coolie committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. According to police sources, Chandra Kumar of Thikkanamcode under Thuckalay police limit took this extreme step when he could not repay the loan amount borrowed from a private party. The police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Three killed in accidents

TIRUCHI : Three persons were killed in road accidents at different places in Tiruchi district in the last two days. Rasu Gounder, 46, was killed when he was knocked down by a motorcycle near Vaiyampatti on Thursday while a BHEL employee, Ramasundaram, was killed after he was hit by a bus near Kamaraj Valaivu near Thuvakudi on Wednesday night. The bus driver Balamurugan has been arrested.In the third accident, one Selvam (35) died on Thursday after being hit by a car at Burma Colony at Navalpattu.

Quacks arrested

Thanjavur: Eleven quacks, who claimed to have MBBS, BDS and MD degress, were arrested by the district police. The quack did not have proper certificates to support their claims. Some of them had not even passed high school, police said.

The arrested are Karthikeyan (35) and Shankaran (62) of Ellaiammankoil street, Thanjavur, Akbar Ali (40), Kamaraj Nagar , Thanjavur, Thangarasun of Thiruvonam who operated nursing home at Kumbakonam, George (55) of SBI colony, Kumbakonam, Sheik Dawood of Melacauvery, Rajendran of Agarathur, Rahamathullah of Madukkur, Gunasekaran of Madukkur, Srinivasan of Pattukottai and Anbarasan of Thiruchitrambalam.

Appeal to Governor

PUDUKOTTAI: A social worker, M. I. Habibullah, in a memorandum given to Governor S S Barnala, has sought removal of ceiling on distance on free bus passes issued to physically challenged persons.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.97 feet on Friday.

The inflow was 2,500 cusecs and the outflow, 1,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
