Rajahmundry: CPI (ML-Janashakti) Rajanna group forest division secretary Naganna and district committee member B. Chanti have alleged that the prisoners of Rajahmundry Central Jail are facing atrocities at the instance of the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons of this region and other staff. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Naganna, who worked as the Nagulakonda dalam commander and was released from jail on bail recently, alleged that the DIG was ill-treating the prisoners and collecting money through prisoners' ration and other means. The Janashakti leader, who was arrested in last November by the police, said that instead of reforming the prisoners in jail, the DIG was polluting their minds. He also alleged that there was no discipline in the jail and the quarantine block was the worst affected as some of the staff members were also ill-treating the inmates. Both the leaders demanded an enquiry by a district Judge or sitting Judge of High Court on the behaviour of DIG and conditions in the prison. Speaking on the other issues, Naganna and Chanti said that there were 15,000 acres of land in the district, which were allegedly encroached upon by landlords and the same land is being cultivated by Dalits. They demanded the district administration to distribute the land immediately to Dalits. They said that the Janashakti-Rajanna group had already taken up an agitation against the Polavaram project.
