ILLEGAL ACT: The police showing equipment used for running a telephone exchange at Thavakkara, on Friday.
Kannur: The Town police on Friday unearthed a parallel illegal telephone exchange being operated using Internet connection and SIM cards here. The police said they had seized equipment including voice over Internet protocol instruments, fixed terminal and signal equipment from the illegal telephone exchange at Thavakkara, being operated by K.P. Ramesh. He is absconding. The police said he was running 16 parallel connections for receiving incoming international calls through the Internet. These calls were being distributed to the local network as local calls using SIM cards. Ramesh had taken a BSNL broadband connection in December 2005 for running the illegal exchange. The police charged him with activities harmful to national security. The police said the illegal exchange facility was raided on a complaint lodged by the Department of Telecommunications Vigilance.
