KOZHIKODE: Examination of witnesses in the public interest case against declaration of Kozhikode a clean city, before it actually became one, commenced before the First Additional Munsiff Court on Friday.

The petition, moved by Ratnakumar Mallisserry and Vinayakumar, also seeks the court's intervention for time bound removal and disposal of solid waste in line with the municipal rules for the same.

Munsiff T.P. Anil Kumar issued an injunction restraining declaration of the city a litter-free area. Nadakkavu Mohammed Koya, editor, Chandrika, Noorbina Rasheed, former member of the State Women's Commission, and K.A. Shaji, reporter, The New Indian Express, were examined as witnesses for the petitioners on Friday.

The declaration of Kozhikode as a clean city was made at a function organised by the Kozhikode Corporation on August 12 last year.

Dr. Sukumar Azhikode was the chief guest.

A petition alleging that the Corporation Secretary had committed contempt of court by conducting the function will come up for arguments in court on March 20.

An advocate's commission, appointed by the court to examine the issue, had submitted to the court an 18-page report supported by 23 photographs showing garbage that had piled up at different places in the city.

More witnesses would be examined in this case on March 20.
