TIRUMALA : Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday offered prayers at the Venkateswara temple here along with his family members.

Two students charred to death

ONGOLE : In a freak accident, two students of Intermediate were charred to death at Martur in Prakasam district on Friday.

The dead were identified as P. Ravi Babu (17) of Yeddanapudi village and K. Venkatesh (17) of Poluru village. They came to Martur to write their intermediate examination. They were returning home on a moped when the accident occurred.

The moped rammed into a heavy vehicle going on the four-lane Chennai-Kolkatta. Petrol tank of the moped broke and it soon caught fire in which both the students were burnt alive. - Special Correspondent

Goods train derails

NIZAMABAD : A Hyderabad-bound goods train derailed immediately after its departure from Bodhan Railway Station on Friday.

According to railway officials, only the engine of the goods train derailed and all bogies were on the track. The engine was brought back on to the track restoring railway traffic. - Staff Reporter

Student electrocuted

SRIKAKULAM : Delleswara Rao, a tenth class student of RCM School here, was electrocuted while carrying an iron ladder which came in contact with a live wire on Friday. - Special Correspondent

Forest official trapped

Rajahmundry : Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths of Eluru and Rajahmundry in a joint raid on Friday arrested an Assistant Conservator of Forest Department and seized assets worth Rs.30 lakhs.

The official, K. Satyanarayana, was recently transferred from Eluru to Rajahmundry. - Staff Reporter

Seven-year jail term for raping minor

KADAPA : SC/ST Special Court Judge B.A. Prakash Rao on Friday sentenced Dommara Nagaraju of Narvakatapalle in Vontimitta mandal to undergo seven-year rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 100 for raping a four-year-old girl.

Nagaraju took away the girl from her house while she was sleeping and raped her on April 30, 2005, according to a case registered by the police. - Staff Reporter

Jailed for rape

GUNTUR : An autorickshaw driver, Muddavarapu Koteswara Rao, 22, has been sentenced to undergo 10-year imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 200 for raping a mentally-retarded girl of Karempudi village in Guntur district on March 19 last year.

Assistant Sessions Court Judge K. Balaramaraju at Gurazala passed the judgment on Friday. - Staff Reporter

Elderly couple

found dead

TENALI (GUNTUR DT.): An elderly couple, both retired teachers, living at Angalakuduru near here were found dead at their residence on Friday.

According to the police, Raavi Venkatarathnam, 85, and Raavi Lakshmikantham, 75, were found dead with injuries on their neck. There had injuries on their stomach also. However, gold ornaments on Lakshmikantham's body were intact.

Suicide attempt

KADAPA : Parvathi, a Dalit woman of Tilaknagar, attempted suicide by dousing herself with kerosene protesting against alleged manhandling by an SI on Thursday night.

Parvathi's son, Prem Sai, an autorickshaw driver, allegedly fell in love with his neighbour which led to altercation between the two families.

Chinna Chowk police took Sai to the police station following a complaint and allegedly thrashed him before her mother. When she objected, the SI allegedly beat her up. - Staff Reporer

Housewife murdered

Raichur: Sujata, 28, wife of Eresh, was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws at Rajalbanda village near here on Wednesday for not bringing more dowry. The police said Eresh married Sujata six years ago. Eresh and his parents had been allegedly torturing Sujata for the past few months to bring more dowry. They allegedly strangled her. The Yergera police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

One killed, 20 injured in road accident

Bidar: A woman died when a maxi-cab overturned at Baridabad village in Bidar taluk on Friday evening. Twenty persons were injured in the accident. The police gave the name of the victim as Akhtar Bi Jeelani, 55, of Satoli village. Of the injured, the condition of four are said to be serious. They have been shifted to hospitals in Hyderabad. The driver is absconding. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

Youth stabbed to death

GULBARGA: Mohammed Raheem, 24, welder, was stabbed to death by a gang at Naya Mohalla locality here on Friday. The police said an altercation broke out between the gang members and Raheem's brother, Mohammed Ghouse, over some issue. When Raheem intervened, the gang members stabbed him. He died at the Government General Hospital. A search is on to nab the culprits.

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Bheemanna on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 800 from him at Jalahalli village of Deodurga taluk on Thursday. He has been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Spurious toddy

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Bheemanna and seized 45 litres of spurious toddy from him when he was selling it at Gandhal village near here on Thursday. He has been remanded in judicial custody. The Idapanur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Music programme

HUBLI: Ganasudha, Hubli, has organised a music programme by siblings Aparna Murthy and Kamala Ananth here at Maharashtra Mandal in Hubli on Saturday at 6 p.m. These artistes had their early education in Carnatic music under Hemalatha Sampath and are now training under the tutelage of R.A. Ramamani of Bangalore, a press release said. They will be accompanied by V. Laxmi on violin, T.N. Ramesh on Mridangam and S. Shadagopan on Kanjira.

End to village feud

HASSAN: Two warring factions of Siddarahatti village of Channarayapatna taluk have ended their 20-year-old enmity and are now living in harmony. Leaders of both factions shook hands in front of Channarayapatna MLA C.S. Putte Gowda recently. Speaking on the occasion, leader of the village Rajappa said the villagers were divided over an issue of paying revenue 20 years ago. The groups approached the police and more than 100 criminal cases were registered in the police station. — Staff Correspondent

KADAPA: Pochamreddy Ravindranath Reddy Trust will conduct three free medical camps for viral fever patients in Kadapa town on March 20, according to Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy said on Friday.

Management meet held

MADANAPALLE: Some 500 students from 25 colleges in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka participated in the national-level management meet `Excellencies-2006' held on Thursday at Madanapalle Institutes of Technology and Science (MITS), Madanapalle. Arrangements for SSC exam reviewed

ANANTAPUR: District Collector Y.V. Anuradha on Friday directed all the officials concerned to coordinate themselves properly to conduct the SCC public examinations which would commence from March 20. She stated that the examinations would be held in 209 centres across the district and 58,124 students would appear.- Staff Reporter

Cultural festival of Himachal today

KADAPA: Cultural festival of Himachal Pradesh will be held in Zion College of Physical Education here on Saturday evening, instead of Kalakshetram, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Friday. State Department of Culture, Sangeeta Nataka Academy and District Cultural Affairs Council would jointly conduct the festivities. Thirty cultural artistes of Himachal Pradesh would perform folk dances like Himachal Vandana ,Deepak Nrutyam,' he said.-Staff Reporter

Lottery system for postings

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector Praveen Prakash adopted a novel policy in giving postings to the 42 newly recruited agricultural extension officers in the district. He instructed District Revenue Officer M. Suryanarayana to follow the lottery system in giving postings so as to rule out irregularities or favouritism. Of the total 42 candidates, 18 were women. The lottery was taken out at the Collectorate court hall by the DRO in presence of Joint Director Agriculture B. Venkata Narayana and others on Thursday evening. - Correspondent

Workshop on minimal access surgery

Kakinada: The Department of Surgery, Rangaraya Medical College and Government General Hospital will organise a workshop on `Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery', popularly called minimal access surgery, at the surgical conference hall in the hospital on March 19, according to S. Raj Kumar, Head, Department of Surgery. He said that over 200 surgeons and postgraduate students would be attending the workshop from both the Godavari districts , Visakhapatnam and Guntur. - Correspondent

Kakinada: Three students of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Law — Mulakala Ravindra (LLB final) B.Vasantha Lakshmi (II year) and Manthena Madhavi Priya (IV year) have been selected to participate in the Andhra University inter-collegiate moot court competitions to be held at Visakhapatnam on March 25. Farm worker commits suicide

KAKINADA: A farm worker Ullingi Chakravarty (25) reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on the outskirts of Radheyapalem village on Friday. The Rajanagaram police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem. - Correspondent

Artificial limbs distributed

Kakinada: Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University L. Venugopala Reddy, who was the chief guest at the third annual day of Nalanda Vidya Niketan School here on Thursday, presented artificial limbs including three wheelchairs, ten calipers and ten artificial limbs to physically challenged children. The artificial limbs were provided with donation of students. A. Vijaya Babu, correspondent, presided. - Correspondent
