SFI activists suspended

Thrissur: Over 50 activists of the Students Federation of India on Friday took out a march from Sree Kerala Varma College to the Thrissur Corporation and burnt an effigy of CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. The effigy was burnt around 1 p.m. Later, the SFI district secretariat suspended district committee member K. Ajayan and Sree Kerala Varma College Union chairman Kiran Paul from the organisation. This was announced here on Friday evening by SFI district secretary Anup Davis Kada. — Staff Reporter

`Disband CPI(M) secretariat'

MALAPPURAM: The Adhinivesa Prathirodha Samiti led by writer M.N. Vijayan has asked the CPI(M)'s central leadership to disband the party's State secretariat and remove Pinarayi Vijayan from the State secretary's post. A joint statement signed by Mr. Vijayan and Samiti secretary V.P. Vasudevan said that would be the only way out to salvage the CPI(M) from a disaster. The Samiti said that the party secretary and his associates were not only deviating from the Left path but heralding a culture of criminal politics as well. It accused Pinarayi Vijayan, M.A. Baby and Thomas Isaac of abandoning the Left path and becoming a bait to imperialist forces. — Staff Reporter

Review petition admitted

Kochi : The Kerala High Court on Friday admitted a petition filed by Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan seeking to review the court's earlier judgement seeking a CBI inquiry into the circumstances under which the witnesses in the Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex scandal case had turned hostile. The petition was admitted by Justice J.M. James. The court had earlier dismissed the petition observing that the trial in the case was complete and the judgement was reserved. — Staff Reporter

Plus Two syllabus to be revised

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Higher Secondary curriculum committee has decided to revise the syllabus of the Plus Two courses and introduce grading system of evaluation for the academic year 2006-2007. The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Education Minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer. The training for teachers based on the revised syllabus will be completed by the end of May. The State Council for Education Research and Training has been entrusted with the task of preparing texts for subjects such as English, Hindi, Arabic and source books for other subjects. — Staff Reporter

Charred body of schoolgirl found

PATHANAMTHITTA: The body of a 14-year old school girl was found in a charred condition in a walled compound near the Vydyuti Bhavan on Friday afternoon. The police identified the deceased as Kaajal Sharma (Chinchu) of Kattookkara Thamarapparampil in Thiruvalla municipal limits. Kaajal was a X class student at SC Seminary High School in Thiruvalla. She was reportedly missing since March 11, the police said. Police surgeon M.S. Umesh conducted the post-mortem examination in the afternoon. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Jacob and Circle Inspector Reghuvaran Pillai are investigating the case. — Staff Reporter

Book release on Sunday

KOLLAM: Raju Narayanaswamy, IAS, will release the research book `Edapalliyum Van Goghvum' at a function here on March 19 by handing over a copy to novelist Kakanadan. The book is published by Saindhava Books and the function will be held at Hotel Ambadi auditorium. — Staff Reporter

LIC staff observe rights day

KOZHIKODE: Employees of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India, under the aegis of LIC Employees' Union Kozhikode division, observed rights day in front of the Life Insurance Corporations's division office here on Friday.

The LIC employees wanted, among other things, recruitment of adequate number of employees, continuation of the recruitment of dependents of employees who die in harness and making the service of temporary staff in the corporation permanent. — Staff Reporter

Temple festival

KOZHIKODE: The eight-day `naveekarana kalasa puja' festival of Kadungonchira Sree Mahaganapathi Temple at West Hill here will be held from March 24 to 31. Bhajan, Pandimela, Ottan Thullal and Theyyam will be held during the evenings on the festival days. The festival will conclude with a `prasada oottu' on March 31 after the `kalasabhishekam' ritual. — Staff Reporter

Housing loan

Kozhikode: The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) in association with Southern Investments (SI) is organising a mega housing loan camp `SI-SBT Grihotsavam' here from Thursday. The programme is being organised at four SBT branches — at the main branch on Kannur Road and the braches at Mavoor Road, Mankavu and Feroke and at SI's office on Bank Road. Housing loans are offered on special terms for all SI housing projects and flats. The camp will conclude on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Seminar

Kozhikode: The Kunhali Marikar Centre for West Asian Studies and Indian Ocean Studies and the Chair for Maritime Studies under Calicut University will jointly conduct a national seminar at the university seminar complex on Saturday.

The seminar is being conducted as part of the University Grants Commission's (UGC) area studies programme.

The topic of the seminar is "importance of India's ocean territory and India's energy security'. — Staff Reporter
