Demonstrations, posters in support of Achuthanandan

Kerala Bureau

PALAKKAD: Several groups of people took out demonstrations and put up banners and posters in support of CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan who has been excluded from the list of CPI(M) candidates for the Assembly polls.

On Friday, a group of tribal people of Attappady Hills took out a demonstration in support of Mr. Achuthanandan in Agali town. Posters in support of the Opposition leader were pasted in front of the Palakkad district committee office of the CPI(M).

Hartal observed

Alappuzha town observed a partial `hartal' against the attack on some shops while a demonstration was going on in the town against the omission of Mr. Achuthanandan as a candidate.

More than 20 CPI(M) stronghold areas had witnessed protest marches, since last evening against the party State committee's decision not to field the veteran Marxist leader in the polls. In Muhamma, one of the red forts in Mararikkulam constituency, some workers burnt the effigy of CPI(M) State secretary. Posters have also appeared across the district, flaying Mr. Vijayan and State secretariat member M. A. Baby.

The local party committee in Punnapra, the native village of Mr. Achuthanandan, passed a resolution demanding a reconsideration of the State committee decision.

The issue also triggered protests in Kozhikode district. Groups of people who claimed to be supporters of the CPI(M) and its feeder organisations voiced protest in several parts of the district.

Demonstrations were also held at Changaramkulam, Kovukunnu, Chandankottu, Nada, Kaiveli, Kothodu, Kakkattil, Mokeri, Kulikunnu and Mambilad.

Posters describing CPI(M) Wayanad district secretary P.A. Mohammed as " anti-communist" appeared in front of the party district committee office at Kalpetta on Thursday.
