CHENNAI: A Web-based Electronic Data Entry (EDI) System was commissioned on Thursday at the Chennai Air Cargo Terminal by Dinesh Kumar, Airport Director. The system connects trade partners including, airlines, air cargo agents, Custom House agents and exporters. The function was attended by senior officials of the Customs Department, representatives of Air Cargo Agents Association of India, Custom House Agents Association, Bar-India and airlines operators. The Internet-based EDI System, which has direct interface with Customs Export EDI System, allows the user to log in for online export transactions from their offices. Export documentation, including payment of Airports Authority of India (AAI) charges can be effected online. The user is required to visit the cargo terminal only for customs examination and physical handing over of the cargo to the custodian and airlines. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kumar was confident that the system would be perfected during usage by the trade partners with proactive interaction between AAI and user agencies. The major benefits of the EDI system are accuracy and elimination of duplication of data entry at different stages, transparency in cargo processing, reduction in transaction cost and time as the system can be accessed from offices by trade partners, and moving towards paperless transaction. With the implementation of AAI Web EDI system, users in Chennai can trace and track their shipments and also complete transactions in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi Airports as the EDI is networked with four metro airports.
Course inaugurated
The Airport Director also inaugurated the seventh basic aviation security course at the AA, Fire Station, Training centre in the presence of senior officials of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The course is being attended by CISF and airline Security officers. Training programmes of such nature are organised to train CISF and other airport officials, to improve the security awareness and ensure effective implementation of security measures at the Chennai Airport.
