GUNTUR: An auditorium with all modern facilities, named after well-known freedom fighter Vavilala Gopalakrishnaiah, will be built in Guntur city at a cost of Rs. 2 crores, said Arja Srikanth, Director of State Department of Culture. Speaking to reporters after a review meeting held with district officials here, he said that the auditorium would come up behind the Vavilala Trust building in Arundelpet. The air-conditioned auditorium would have all facilities like modern acoustic and lighting system, car parking and rooms for artistes among other things. "It will be convenient for the Government as well as the private groups to stage dramas and conduct cultural programmes," Mr. Srikanth said. The Vavilala Trust would be the trustee of the auditorium.
Paintings to adorn walls
District Collector G. Jayalakshmi said plans were being finalised for the auditorium, which would become one of the landmarks. Paintings would adorn the walls of the auditorium. The construction would begin soon and was expected to be ready by 2007. "It would be a fitting tribute to the freedom fighter on his centenary year celebrations," she said. The rooms in the auditorium would be utilised for imparting music classes for children. Vavilala Trust member Leela Maheshwari, other officials from revenue, tourism and culture departments were present at the review on Thursday.
