CHENNAI: Local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai swung into action on Friday to clean up the walls on the arterial GST Road following a directive by the Election Commission.

Panchayat staff white washed compound walls of defunct Standard Motors Company, Perungalathur, sidewalls of culverts in and around Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai. Images of political leaders were painted on both sides of the entire 3/4-km-long wall.

With the Election Commission setting time frame for the political parties to remove the posters, banners and graffiti, the district administration asked the officials to implement the Commission's orders strictly.

According to panchayat officials in Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur, party leaders at the local level have been issued letters to remove the posters and graffiti on their own. On their part, the local bodies have involved their staff to clean them up.

There is hardly any wall space unused on public buildings in and around Tambaram. Even the walls of subways, bridges and perimeter walls of private buildings are not spared. There is a stipulation that parties get permission from the owners of the properties, but enquiries revealed that it was not done.
