VISAKHAPATNAM: The Rotary Foundation is involved in a big way in polio eradication throughout the world and had spent as much as Rs. 3,000 crores for the purpose so far, according to Rotary International district 3020 governor Manda Chiranjeevi Das. Talking to mediapersons here on Friday, he said Rs. 120 crores was given to the Indian Government towards polio eradication in the country. The amount was being spent on transportation of vaccine, maintenance of cold chain, etc., he revealed. Mr. Das, who was on an official visit to Rotary Club Visakha Port City, also claimed that the Rotary Foundation was spending Rs. 50 crores every year on health and education in India. "It has also spent 10 lakh dollars for the tsunami-affected in India. In our Rotary district comprising the six revenue districts from Srikakulam to Krishna in coastal Andhra, we have spent Rs.1.6 crores towards construction of 64 pucca houses in Magasanidibba near Kakinada, the worst affected in our State during the tsunami strike. We also plan to built a beautiful community hall there at a cost of Rs.22 lakhs," he said.
20 crores for antibiotics
Apart from this, the Rotary Foundation had donated Rs.20 crore worth fourth generation broad spectrum antibiotics to tackle the outbreak of diseases during the floods.
