HYDERABAD: A group of students allegedly attacked the Principal of College of Arts of Osmania University, G. Satyanarayana, in his chamber on Friday when he refused them permission to hold a meeting inside the college. The same group also allegedly beat up two activists of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) -- Kalyan and Mahesh -- when they reportedly persuaded the college principal to lodge a complaint with the police against the attackers. Mr. Satyanarayana was attending a seminar in the college when the group, led by a research scholar P. Ravi, approached him seeking permission to hold a meeting in Room No. 57 of the college on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., DCP East K.V.R.N. Reddy told The Hindu .
Bleeding injury
However, the principal agreed to permit the meeting if it was held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. since classes in the forenoon sessions would be disturbed if meeting was held in the morning and walked into his room. "The students got furious when the principal stuck to his guns and one of them threw a tray at him. He tried to shield his face and suffered a bleeding injury on the hands," the DCP explained. Some other members of the group hurled the chairs and damaged property in his chamber. On learning about this, Kalyan and Mahesh came to the college asking Mr. Satyanarayana to call in the police, the DCP said.
Abusing by caste
"Members of the group then attacked the two ABVP activists and even robbed them of a gold chain," Mr. Reddy added. Kalyan also charged that some of the attackers abused him in the name of his caste. Based on his complaint, the Osmania University police booked a case against them under Prevention of Atrocities Against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act and Sections 147, 148, 324, 504 and 379 (theft) of IPC. Another case was booked under Sections 147, 332, 427 and 504 of IPC following a separate complaint given by the college principal. Police posted special pickets on the campus to meet any eventuality and launched a hunt for the accused. Meanwhile, the Osmania University Teachers Association, condemning the attack on the principal, called for an emergency meeting of its General Body on Saturday to decide their future course of action.
