Ekaterinburg : Former World women's champion and the oldest competitor in the fray, Maia Chiburdanidze of Georgia, came into strong contention for a semifinal berth in the women's World chess championship with a lucky victory over Viktorija Cmilyte of Lithuania in the first quarterfinal game here on Saturday. On an exciting day, Alisa Galliamova of Russia turned out to be the other winner when she outwitted Georgian contender Nino Khurtsidze in a finely crafted game. The other two games ended in draws albeit after tough battles. Splitting the point was the lone Chinese left in the fray, Xu Yuhua, who signed peace with 2004 finalist Ekaterina Kovalevskaya of Russia while Russian Svetlana Matveeva failed to get past the solid defence of Marie Sebag of France.
