Anand begins with a defeat

NEW DELHI: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand opened his campaign in the Amber blindfold and rapid chess losing 1.5-0.5 to former champion Alexander Morozevich in Monaco on Saturday. Anand lost the opening blindfold game with white pieces in 68 moves in Sicilian Najdorf and drew the rapid encounter with black in 35 moves of Slav Defence.

Top seed Veselin Topalov spoiled Vassily Ivanchuk's birthday party by beating him in both forms of the game and emerged as the only player to win 2-0 in the opening round.

Blindfold: Leok van Wely (Ned) bt Levon Aronian (Arm); Peter Leko (Hun) bt Peter Heine Nielsen (Den); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) lost to Veselin Topalov (Bul); Francisco Pons Vallejo (Esp) bt Peter Svidler (Rus); V. Anand (Ind) lost to Alexander Morozevich (Rus); Boris Gelfand (Isr) drew with Alexander Grischuk (Rus).

Rapid: Aronian bt Wely; Nielsen drew with Leko; Topalov bt Ivanchuk; Svidler drew with Vallejo; Morozevich drew with Anand; Grischuk drew with Gelfand.
