dated March 20, 1956: Nehru's role in India

Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, Minister without portfolio, told a nationwide radio audience in the US that any reference to a successor to Prime Minister Nehru was an "external approach." Mr. Menon was asked whether he would be nominated by Mr. Nehru to succeed him. Characterising the question as "illogical", Mr. Menon said that in India, the Prime Minister does not "nominate" his successor. "That question does not arise in a parliamentary structure. The Prime Minister is the head of a political party and not anybody's nominee. Besides, Mr. Nehru is in very good health, has far more energy, mental and physical, than men half his age."
