Jaya's disqualification

The President's action of disqualifying Jaya Bachchan as Rajya Sabha member with retrospective effect is welcome.

Ms. Bachchan should have resigned on her own when it became clear that she was holding an office of profit under the state. The Samajwadi Party, it is hoped, will learn some lessons from the episode.

Though it is unfortunate for Ms. Bachchan to have lost her membership, she should honour the President's decision instead of making it an issue.

With the disqualification of Ms. Bachchan, the floodgates seem to have opened for many other disqualifications. No doubt, it is painful to lose membership after getting elected/nominated.

It is for the political parties to ensure that they do not make mistakes while nominating members to Parliament and that their nominees do not attract disqualification at a later date.

The same treatment should be meted out to all MPs who attract disqualification, irrespective of their party affiliation. In the interest of the nation, the Government should clearly lay down what constitutes an office of profit and disqualify all the MPs who are holding it and have held it in the past with retrospective effect.

The monetary equivalent of their salaries and perks should be recovered from them.

The Election Commission's recommendation to disqualify Ms. Bachchan seems to have been made in haste, without much contemplation and debate.
