Letters to the Editor
The news that Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has ordered the suspension of the five police officials from whose homes and offices the Lokayukta unearthed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income is heartening. Care should be taken to ensure that action against them does not stop with suspension. Similar action should be taken against corrupt officials in the higher bureaucracy.
B. Harish,
How is it that the top brass did not know that their subordinates were living beyond their means? Government officials above a certain rank should henceforth be asked to submit the assessment of their personal income and immovable assets every year to the higher-ups.
Panchapagesan Kothandaraman,
I am sure the latest revelation is only the tip of the iceberg. The policemen could not have acquired such wealth overnight. Unless the law is amended to confiscate the property of those whose assets are seized, and to put them behind bars, such activities will go on.
V. Srinivasan,
Corruption on such a scale cannot exist without the knowledge of the higher-ups. There must be something radically wrong in the entire administration. Public confidence in the police is at an all-time low.
