PONDICHERRY : The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajnath Singh has said that the BJP was the only party that remained firm and united.

Addressing a large meeting of party workers organised by the Pondicherry State unit here on Sunday (when he kick started the poll campaign), Mr. Singh said that several parties including the Congress had split vertically over the years.

But the BJP was united, with no splits or divisions, he said.

Appealing to the people in Pondicherry to support the party (which would go it alone in the coming polls) massively, he said the BJP had made its presence felt in the South.

Presence in the South

It had come to power in Karnataka as a partner in the coalition ministry. He said that the country's flag was flying high when BJP was in power at the Centre. Mr. Singh said that Pondicherry had full potential to be made a developed State.

The vice president of the party L. Ganesan, the former Union Minister S. Tirunavukarasar, the president of Pondicherry State unit R. Kesavalu and its general secretary M. Visweswaran were among those who spoke. Ms. Lalitha Kumaramangalam, who is in charge of the Pondicherry BJP unit, was among those present.

Warm reception

Earlier, Mr. Singh was given a warm reception on his arrival at the border by a team of party men led by Mr. Kesavalu.

This was his first ever visit to Pondicherry. The party's big wigs including Venkiah Naidu had addressed workers' meeting here last week and made it clear that the party would face the Pondicherry Assembly polls on its own.
