KOLKATA: The condition of Anil Biswas, State Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who suffered a massive haemorrhage in the brain and was operated upon in Woodlands nursing home here late on Saturday night, remains "critical but, at present, stable," according to doctors attending on him on Sunday. Mr. Biswas has been kept on life-support system and he underwent a CT Scan during the day, a spokesperson of the nursing home said. A medical board has been set up to oversee his treatment. An emergency meeting of the CPI (M) was held at the party headquarters here to review the situation. Senior leaders, including Jyoti Basu, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Chairman of the Left Front committee Biman Bose all Polit Bureau members attended the meeting. Mr. Basu said Mr. Biswas's condition was "not good" and the medical board would be keeping the party leadership informed. Mr. Biman Bose said the blood clot in Mr. Biswas' brain had been removed successfully and his condition, though critical, was stable. Mr. Biswas, who attended a State Committee meeting earlier in the day to finalise the election strategy, complained of feeling unwell shortly after he reached his residence on Saturday evening. He was to have left for Malda in north Bengal later in the night but was shifted to Woodlands nursing home. A.B. Bardhan, general secretary of the Communist Party of India, senior Ministers of the West Bengal Government and local Congress leader Somen Mitra were among those who called on Mr. Biswas.
