SWEPT ASIDE: Bengal ran into a determined T.P. Singh, who missed a century but ensured Railways' victory with a classy 90.

LUCKNOW: Madan Yadav earns his living the tough way. He has to ensure that the wheels are well oiled and the track alignments are in place. He brought his professionalism into play at the K.D. Singh `Babu' Stadium here by performing a leading role in Railways' thumping 101-run win over Bengal in the semifinals of the all-India inter-state one-day cricket tournament.

After Tejinder Pal Singh smashed an unbeaten 90 to help Railways post a good total, Yadav's stifling spell made sure that Bengal didn't have a chance in the match.

Sanjay Bangar (44) and Amit Pagnis (31) ensured a solid opening stand before T.P. Singh took over. His 104-ball essay contained only six fours but his running between the wickets always kept the Bengal players on their toes.

A target of 267 was well within Bengal's reach, provided Ganguly fired on all cylinders. But a fine ball from Harvinder Singh crashed into his stumps and with his departure, the team's chances vanished and so did the spectators from the stands.

In the other semifinal, Uttar Pradesh thrashed Baroda by 102 runs on a disgraceful pitch in what proved to be a poor advertisement for Indian cricket.

Baroda had itself to blame for allowing U.P. to recover from a precarious 48 for four. Jyoti Yadav's composed effort of 99 not out (113 balls, 7x4) later proved to be the difference.
