Naxals, police exchange fire

MAHBUBNAGAR: An hour-long exchange of fire took place between Maoists and a special police party on Sunday afternoon in the backwaters of the river Krishna between Srisailam reservoir and Kollapur. No casualties were reported. According to information reaching here, a special police party from Kurnool district was on a country boat on a routine combing operation when they were noticed by a group of naxals camping on a hillock.

When the naxalites opened fire, the police party retaliated. None were injured on both sides._Correspondent

VPT achieves all-time record

VISAKHAPATNAM : The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has established an all-time record in discharging coking coal in a single day.

On Saturday, a highest quantity of 29,505 tons of coking coal was discharged from the vessel m.v. Red Orchid using two floating cranes, surpassing the previous best discharge of 29,390 tons achieved on January 31 this year. The cargo was imported by the Steel Authority of India Ltd.

Minister's announcement draws flak

HYDERABAD: The State Struggle Committee of Unemployed has faulted the School Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi for announcing that the notification to fill 15,475 posts of teachers would be issued shortly as there were 80,000 posts lying vacant. In a statement issued here, R.Krishnaiah, president, said that given the fact that DSCs had not been constituted for the last three years and that 10 per cent of teachers were retiring every year, there would be more than 80,000 vacancies. Besides, the Congress had made a pre-election promise to fill 60,000 teacher's posts. Hence, it was the responsibility of the Government to fill all the vacant posts, he said.

Bhagat Singh's 75th death anniversary

HYDERABAD: The CPI State Council has called upon its district units to observe 75th death anniversary of Sardar Bhagat Singh on March 23. K.Narayana, secretary, said in a press release that the party had also decided to celebrate the freedom fighter's centenary year (2006-07), in response to the call given by the National Council. Programmes depicting sacrifices made by Bhagat Singh and his daredevil deeds would be organised during the year. The Council also condemned the arrest on Saturday of farmers who were on hunger strike since March 13. It sought the intervention of Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy in the release of the arrested persons and finding solutions to the farmers' problems.

Demand for permanent toddy licence policy

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Toddy Workers' Association has demanded permanent toddy licence policy in view of the three-month extension given to the present regulations getting expired on March 31. N.Dharma Biksham, president, in a statement issued here on Wednesday wanted the excise policy to be announced immediately, since it was due in October last year. He criticised the administration for extending the policy twice.

International trade unions meet

HYDERABAD: The general secretary of AP Regional Rural Bank Employees' Association S.Venkateswar Reddy will participate in an international trade unions meet at Johannesburg from March 20 to 22. Mr. Reddy will accompany Dilip Kumar Mukherjee, general secretary, All-India RRBs Employees' Association.

Talks end in failure

VIZIANAGARAM: The talks held between FACOR management and ad-hoc committee of employees in the presence of Additional Commissioner of Labour M.S.N. Rao, Dy. Commissioner of Labour S.Varahala Reddy and Joint Collector M. Jagan Mohan on Saturday evening failed once again as both parties stuck to their stand.

Food inspector in ACB net

VIZIANAGARAM: Food Inspector S. Ghouse Moiuddin was caught red-handed by Anti-Corruption Bureau officials while accepting Rs. 50,000 from two dealers at his office here on Sunday, according to DSP (ACB) P. Madhusudhana Rao. He said the food inspector demanded cash for not booking any case against these dealers in pulses. He said that a case related to "disproportionate assets" was also pending against Mr. Moiuddin in ACB Court, Guntur. The food inspector was arrested after the chemical test conducted on the tainted notes proved positive, he said and added that he would be produced in ACB Court in Visakhapatnam. — Correspondent

SSC arrangements

VIZIANAGARAM: District Educational Office, M. Annapoorna said that a total of 29,293 students, including 6,303 private candidates, would write the SSC public examination beginning from Monday at 120 centres in the district. Pulse polio workshop launched

MADANAPALLE: A pulse polio orientation workshop was launched on Saturday at the premises of Rotary Club, Madanapalle. District chairman Srinvasa Murthy called for eradication of polio, detailing the efforts put on by Rotary International. He sought public support for the programme. Municipal Chairperson Ravikumar, Commissioner Nagabhushanam, Sub-Collector A. Babu and others participated. Correspondent

Echoupdate-2006 inaugurated

KURNOOL: Addressing a meeting after inaugurating the Echoupdate-2006, sponsored by Department of Cardiology and Indian Academy of Echo-cardiography, he said students preferred their education in Government medical colleges but took up career in the private sector.

He said an amount of Rs. 12 crores was released for development of Kurnool General Hospital. Superintendent said the mortality rate in the Acute Medical Care unit came down by 30 per cent after the ventilators were installed in the hospital. He thanked Dr. I.V. Rao who was behind sanctioning the machines to the Kurnool Hospital.

Ration cards for pensioner assured

KADAPA: Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J. C. Diwakar Reddy on Sunday assured issue of ration cards to all those eligible among 21-lakh pensioners in the State.

The Government enhanced the pension sum to Rs. 200 a month, he said after inaugurating a gram panchayat secretariat building built at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs at Mydukur.
