VISAKHAPATNAM: Rashtriya Seva Samithi (RASS), an NGO engaged in multifarious activities in 2,000 villages in four States, will set up Sarvodayanagar on the city outskirts to train activists from other NGOs.

A training centre for NGOs of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chattisgarh will come up at Bairavanipalem near Madhurawada on an extent of four acres, RASS president G. Muniratnam said on Sunday. The complex with provision for training and rehabilitation of physically challenged persons would be built at a cost of Rs.5 crores. The construction will be taken up next year.

Dr. Muniratnam, member-secretary and executive chairman of Confederation of NGOs of Rural India, told reporters that RASS, engaged in community empowerment and skill upgradation in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa for past 25 years, was on an expansion drive in the neighbouring States.

Expressing satisfaction over the measures taken up by Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation for empowerment of slum-dwellers and poorer sections, he said RASS had sponsored the education and other expenses of 16,000 children with foreign funds.

Sahayagramam, set up by the NGO on an extent of 20 acres on the outskirts of Tirupati, is based on the self-help concept with the help of AWO of Germany and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

    Micro-finance

Dr. Muniratnam said they were also popularising science and technology among the farmers by undertaking various projects at Krishi Vignana Kendra at Renigunta in Chittoor district.
