Man held for murdering wife

TIRUCHI: Shanmugham has been arrested for murdering his wife Bhanumathi (26) in their house at Edayathumangalam near Lalgudi on Sunday. He married her seven months back. Sources said he asked her to give him money to consume liquor, which led to a verbal duel between them.

Woman dies

Thillaiarasi (35), who was hospitalised after allegedly being hit by her husband Somu last month in their house at Manapparai, succumbed on Saturday.

According to police, a wordy quarrel broke out between them. Somu hit his wife with a stick and kicked her on the chest. So, she left for her mother's house in Periapuliyur in Erode district and was admitted to the Government Hospital there.

Collector's appeal

Collector K. Nanda Kishore has sought the cooperation of political parties and cadres for smooth conduct of the assembly polls.

In a press release, the Collector, who is also the District Election Officer, said writing election-related slogans on government-owned buildings, roads besides erecting flag posts and pasting notices on government buildings etc., have been prohibited.

Action would be initiated against violators under the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1959.

Watchman dies

Subbiah (62) of E. Pudur, who was working as a watchman in a private firm, died after being hit by a lorry on Madurai Road, here on Sunday. Police said he was riding a bicycle, when a lorry hit him from behind causing injuries. He was admitted to the Government Hospital, Tiruchi where he succumbed. The Traffic Investigation (South) Wing has registered a case.

Fake passport: one held

Periyasamy (48) of Melur taluk in Madurai district was held at the airport here on Sunday after he was found to be in possession of a fake passport. Sources said he obtained a fake passport under the name of Ramesh Babu by giving a address in Tennur in 1998.Using this, he left for Dubai in 2003 where he worked for four years. When he returned to Tiruchi from Dubai on Sunday, immigration sleuths verified his passport and detected the crime.

Sources said Periyasamy had obtained a genuine passport in his name in 1978 and left for Singapore in 1993 where he worked for four years. He had to return as his employment contract came to an end. One of his friends advised him to obtain a passport under a fictitious name to return to Singapore. His friend handed over the fake passport to him in 1998. Using this, he left for Dubai in 2003.

Campus recruitment

Cyber Technologies, Chennai, would conduct a campus recruitment programme at Sudharsan Engineering College, Sathiyamangalam, on March 23 for the benefit of engineering students in Tiruchi district. Final year students of Information Technology, Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) branches, with 65 per cent and above marks in aggregate were eligible to take part in this interview.
