TIRUCHI: Women should shun inhibitions and gain self-confidence. It would enable them develop talents and excel in different fields, observed speakers from various walks of life at the International Women's Day celebrations organised by the Forum of Women in Public Sector held at the Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited on Saturday. V. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, said war was waged against social inequality even during the days of freedom struggle. Patriots while fighting for the freedom of the country initiated steps for launching social movements to liberate the women of the weaker sections and work for their overall development. Poets like Bharathi were in the forefront in fighting for the rights of the women. He said that the living style of the women was fast changing. Though women have made various achievements, the man-woman equality was yet to be achieved. The benefits of various developments achieved were yet to reach the rural women. However he expressed happiness at the fast changes taking place, thanks to the changing economic and communication scenario. Referring to the functioning of the BHEL, Dr. Gopalakrishnan noted that women have started evincing keen interest in the fields of industrial technology and electronics. Of the total BHEL staff, women accounted for 3.8 per cent. The management was providing all encouragement to the women staff and was also willing to employ more women. P. M. Mansure, Vice-Principal, Jamal Mohamed College, came down heavily against the advertisements and television serials, which denigrated women and led to their slavery. He complained that the mobile phone culture was causing much damage to the reputation of the women. The women should take steps to maintain their good health, as 60 per cent of the blood donated was used for curing women. Alamelu Sivaraman, Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India, called upon members of the Forum of Women in Public Sector to come forward to extend a helping hand to the women employed in unorganised sectors. Developing self-confidence would help women to come out of the problems confronting them. General Manager (Human Resource), BHEL, Subbarayan, president of the BHEL Women's Welfare Association Vasantha Subbarayan and president of the forum Krishnaveni Sekar spoke. Senior Officer (finance), BHEL, Nithya presented an annual report of the forum.
