VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh High Court Judge J. Chalameswar on Sunday lamented the "casualness that has crept into judiciary."

"Some element of casualness, of late, had crept into the system. Callousness, indifference, lack of proper study of the subject and lack of commitment will damage the credibility of the profession," he cautioned the legal fraternity at a meeting organised to mark the formal commencement of classes on law and procedure for junior lawyers.

The Bezwada Bar Association (BBA) organised the classes.

Justice Chalameswar said `absolute commitment' of lawyers was essential if they wished to become judicial officers.

The profession commanded a great deal of respect in society but not in terms of salary or perks. The respect came with the nature of duty the officers discharged.

"We are looked upon as some kind of arbitrators, discharging the sacred duty of justice," he reminded.

Justice Chalameswar said hard work was essential to dispassionately analyse a case and render a verdict uninfluenced by any other aspect. Any deviation from this would ruin the credibility of the profession.

"Classically, integrity is a requirement that goes with judiciary by defaultWe are not only expected to be honest but we must work hard too," he underlined.

The judge felt that the quality of preparation amongst lawyers to argue and analyse a case had left much to be desired.

Referring to the education being imparted in law colleges, Justice Chalameswar said training in these institutions was very formal and minimal. N. V. Ramana, another judge in the High Court, said a lawyer had a vital role to play in maintaining order in society and urged advocates to lead an exemplary life. Justice Ramana said the sanctity attached to courts of law and bar associations should be preserved at all costs.Justice Chalameswar later unveiled a portrait of late M. Thirupathi Rayudu, a member of the BBA.

BBA president P. Siva Sankara Rao presided, while Krishna District and Sessions Judge S. Bhujanga Rao, Second Additional District Judge and Metropolitan Sessions Judge B. Siva Sankara Rao were present.
