NEW DELHI: In a bizarre case, a 20-year-old man, who had married a young woman against the wishes of her family, was allegedly shot dead by her minor brother at East Vinod Nagar in East Delhi on Saturday evening. The accused, who has since been arrested along with his minor accomplice, was apparently angry with his brother-in-law as he used to tease him about his family not being able to do anything while he managed to marry his sister against all odds. According to the police, Sanjay Dhama, a resident of R-Block in East Vinod Nagar, was talking on his mobile phone just outside his house when two men riding a motorcycle came there and shot at him from behind around 7-15 p.m. Sanjay's friend, Sumit Tyagi, who happened to be present nearby heard the commotion and rushed to help his friend who had sustained a bullet injury in the right side of his back. Sumit rushed him to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he was declared upon arrival. Investigations revealed that Sanjay had married 19-year-old Meenakshi, a resident of E-Block in East Vinod Nagar, at an Arya Samaj Temple on January 23. Thereafter, the duo, who had been through a clandestine courtship for the past couple of years, fled from home following which Meenakshi's parents lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Sanjay had kidnapped his daughter. Four days later, Sanjay and Meenakshi surrendered before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate when they came to know about the police complaint. In her statement before the magistrate, Meenakshi said she had married Sanjay out of her own choice and that she was not kidnapped or forced to marry him. Following her statement, Meenkashi's father ostensibly agreed to marry his daughter to Sanjay in a grand ceremony. Meenakshi then started living with her parents. The matter having sorted out, Sanjay would often tease his 14-year-old brother-in-law saying that his family could not do anything to prevent him from marrying his sister. Meenakshi's brother apparently did not like it. Seeking to "settle scores", the young boy also managed to procure a country-made revolver, the police said. On Saturday evening too, Sanjay teased him once again on the same issue over the phone. He then picked up the firearm and, along with his minor friend, reached Sanjay's place on the motorcycle and shot him dead from behind.
