Anand defeats Svidler

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand moved into the joint lead of the rapid section at 1.5 points after beating Russia's Peter Svidler in 53 moves of their second round match of the Amber blindfold and rapid chess tournament in Monaco on Sunday.

In blindfold, where Anand drew with black against Svidler in 23 moves, Armenia's Levon Aronian stunned top seed Veselin Topalov on a day when only two games proved decisive.

Blindfold: Alexander Grischuk (Rus) 1 drew with Francisco Pons Vallejo (Esp) 1.5; Alexander Morozevich (Rus) 1.5 drew with Boris Gelfand (Isr) 1; Peter Svidler (Rus) 0.5 drew with Viswanathan Anand 0.5; Levon Aronian (Arm) 1.5 bt Veselin Topalov (Bul) 1; Peter Heine Nielsen (Den) 0.5 drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) 0.5; Loek van Wely (Ned) 1.5 drew with Peter Leko (Hun) 1.5.
