Spate of accidents in city claims four lives

CHENNAI: Road accidents have claimed four more lives in and around the city in the past two days. Three of the four victims were in their twenties, including a two-wheeler rider.

Two of the victims were pedestrians who were mowed down while trying to cross the road.

The first accident on Sunday was reported near Muttukadu on the East Coast Road. Police said around 5.30 p.m., a van carrying six persons was on its way to the city. While passing Muttukadu, the vehicle went out of control. In the mishap, P. Dilip (25), a resident of Tiruneermalai, died on the spot. Five others were injured and were admitted to the Government General hospital.

In the second accident, an MTC bus knocked down a pedestrian on Sardar Patel Road in Guindy traffic police limits. The victim, K. Kuppan (38) of Chettikulam village in Vandavasi Taluk, was crossing the road when hit by the bus around 9.45 p.m. He died on the spot. The bus driver, P. Subramanian, was arrested.

In another accident, a 20-year-old two-wheeler rider died after his vehicle hit an autorickshaw on Thanikachalam Street in T.Nagar around 10.15 p.m.

Police said V. Prabu lost control of his vehicle and hit an autorickshaw. The victim sustained severe head injuries and was admitted to the Government General hospital, where he succumbed to injuries later in the night. Pondy Bazaar Traffic Investigation police have registered a case. In the fourth accident an identified youth was run over by a van on GST Road.

Police said the youth was crossing GST road near Pallavaram when the van, on its way to Tiruchi from Chennai, hit him. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, police said.
