Educate youth about Indian culture: Kumaraswamy

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Youth and children should be educated about the country's culture and human values. Educational institutions have a greater role to play in making them understand our culture and make them good citizens, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra in Arkavathy Layout here on Monday.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that in the age of globalisation, youth are increasingly getting attracted to western culture, and are ignoring Indian culture.

He said that it is only because of the work of social organisations such as the Rashtrotthana Parishat that our culture still exists. "Though I have not been associated with the works of parishat, its contribution towards protection of our culture cannot be ignored," he said. He recalled the parishat's role in highlighting contributions of freedom fighters. He also appreciated it for providing education to all sections of society, including those living in slums.

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said the youth should be educated about the travails of farmers. He said the present coalition government will support all works done for protecting the country's culture.

Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Math said there is a need to change the education system, which gives more stress on academics. The present generation should be made mentally, physically and spiritually strong, apart from being made strong in academics, he said.

The Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra has been built on five acres of land donated by ophthalmologist the late M.C. Modi. According to B.V. Vidyananada Shenoy of the parishat, the education centre will provide education, which focuses on all-round development of a child.

The centre will start classes from nursery to 8th Standard from the coming academic year. It will provide all the facilities available in an international school.
