dated March 22, 1956: Mountbatten in Madras

A warm and cordial reception was accorded to Lord and Lady Mountbatten when they arrived at the Meenambakkam airport on March 21 from Cochin on the last lap of their one-week tour of this country. They spent about 40 minutes meeting old friends and forming new ones before taking off to Rangoon. This halt provided the opportunity for a happy meeting between the last British Governor-General (Mountbatten) and the first Indian Governor-General ( C. Rajagopalachari) of pre-Republic India.
