The avian flu threat appears to have blown over. But poultry farms in the city and suburbs are yet to recover from the crippling loss caused by the slump in sales. Though kebab and Tandoori chicken outlets are back in business, the cash registers not ringing the way they used to. Dejected by the tardy sales, poultry farmers and traders in the district have decided to zero in on the political class to help them stave off a crisis. And what better time than the elections to drive home their point? The district unit of the All-Kerala Poultry Farmers and Traders Association has promised electoral support to political parties and candidates who are willing to promote their cause. At a convention held here the other day, the association pledged to vote for candidates who take a favourable stand on the poultry sector. It remains to be seen how much the humble chicken will succeed in upstaging political issues in the run up to the polls.
