Unfortunate

It is unfortunate that a person of Verghese Kurien's stature should have resigned as chairman of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation. It is not so much the resignation but the circumstance under which he resigned that is disturbing. He deserved better for his unflinching service of nearly 40 years. The new leadership will miss his wisdom, imaginative thinking, and foresight.

Pradhyumna Rajanikant Kansara,

Anand, Gujarat

A brilliant administrator who made Amul what it is today, and built the Anand unit of the Gujarat Milk Cooperative brick by brick has exited. I remember his visit to ICF years ago, to personally satisfy himself about the quality of railway coaches being manufactured for the safe transport of milk containers from Gujarat to Delhi and other parts of the country.

It is unfortunate that Dr. Kurien, father of the White Revolution, had to resign under not-so-pleasant circumstances. It is because of his dedicated service and ceaseless efforts that undiluted milk in sachets is available all over the country. Milk producers also get their due.

R. Thirunarayanan,
Chidambaram, T.N.

Dr. Kurien served the cooperative dairy sector for over three decades with total commitment. The decision of the GCMMF board members to remove him appears to be an orchestrated act. The Federation has emerged as a symbol of cooperative success and should not succumb to designs that harm the interests of farmers.

The unceremonious exit of Dr. Kurien is regrettable. He turned a state of milk shortage into one of plenty and paved the way for the establishment of many cooperative milk societies across the country.

Hats off to our bureaucrats and vested interests for finally succeeding in making Dr. Kurien quit his post. It is a matter of great shame and anguish that a man who made such a significant contribution to the cooperative movement, and revolutionised the dairy scene in India at a time when supply of milk was scarce should have been treated thus.

Vinod Menon,
Chennai
