News Analysis
Award mix-up and factual errors! In "Padma Awards presented" (March 21, 2006), the Padma Vibhushan, and not the Padma Bhushan (as published), was conferred on Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Colathur Rama Krishnaswamy Rao Sahib and Nirmala Deshpande. C.R. Krishnaswamy Rao Sahib was conferred this award for his distinguished service in the Government as a bureaucrat, and not "bureaucratic", as published. The Padma Bhushan (not the highest civilian honour in the country, as published) is third in the hierarchy of civilian awards, after the Bharat Ratna (the highest civilian honour) and the Padma Vibhushan. The Padma Shri is fourth. Cardiologist Kewal Kishan Talwar, and not Kewal Krishan Talwar, as we had said, was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan. Mix-up again. In "Music can create a good society, says Kalam" (Delhi, March 21, 2006, page 3), a report on the conferment of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for 2005, we got the portfolio of Minister Ambika Soni wrong. Ms. Soni is Minister of Tourism and Culture, and not the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, as mentioned in the photo caption. Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, holds charge of that portfolio. In the Editorial ("In search of energy security", March 16, 2006, page 10), ONGC is the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited. It is not the Oil and National Gas Corporation, as we had said.
