B.Com student ends life

TIRUPATI: Geetha Rani, 20, a B.Com final year student at Sri Padmavathi Women's Degree College, committed suicide in the hostel bathroom in the early hours of Tuesday.

She reportedly did not perform well in the two examinations held on March 16 and 18 and was in a deep state of shock and desperation since then.

Her roommate reported the matter to the management after she failed to get any response from the bathroom that was bolted from inside. The matter was immediately reported to SVU police station.The girl's parents rushed to the hostel on receipt of information. Her father, a barber in the TTD tonsuring centre at Tirumala, explained to the cops that they had, in fact, consoled her when she told them about her poor performance.

M.Tech counselling schedule on Net

HYDERABAD: The registration No. verses hall-ticket Nos. for the Ph.D. (full time) entrance examination - 2006 and counselling schedule for M.Tech (sequential summer school) programme-2006 has been posted online on the website of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University.

Nine students hurt as autorickshaw overturns

ADILABAD : Nine schoolchildren were injured when an autorickshaw in which they were going to school fell into a canal on Tuesday.

Gnaneshwar of class IV received serious injuries. All the injured persons were admitted to hospital. Thirteen students, belonging to Syedpur village in Bela mandal, were coming to school near Anukunta village when the accident occurred at Mediguda village in Jainad village. - Staff Reporter

`Ugadi asthanam'

TIRUMALA : The TTD management is gearing itself for the conduct of `Ugadi asthanam' at the temple of Lord Venkateswara on March 30.

In connection with the festival, the management has cancelled all `arjitha seva' rituals like Thomala, Archana,Thiruppavada,

Brahmotsavam, Vasanthotsavam and Unjal seva. However, the `sahasra deepalankara seva' will be performed as usual.

Two women drowned in tank

KURNOOL : Two women were drowned in a tank at Masidpuram in Mahanandi mandal of Kurnool district on Tuesday.

According to reports, the women, identified as Santhi, 16, and Lakshmi Devi, 30, got into the tank for washing clothes. Two other women were rescued by passers-by. - Staff Reporter

Three naxals held

KARIMNAGAR : The police arrested three naxalites belonging to the CPI(ML) Praja Prathigatana group and recovered arms and ammunition from their dump in the forests of Narsingapur village of Mahamutharam mandal on Tuesday.

Disclosing this to newsmen here, Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan said that on information about the movement of naxalites, the special police parties were combing the forests. The arrested were identified as zonal committee secretary Raghu alias Chandranna and dalam members - M. Babu alias Babanna and Sadavalli.- Staff Reporter

Cotton farmer commits suicide

ADILABAD : Goduri Nadipanna, 45, a cotton farmer of Ada village in Jainad mandal, died in the wee hours at the Government hospital here on Tuesday while undergoing treatment after he consumed poison.

Nadipanna consumed pesticide on March 19 reportedly due to mounting debts. - Staff Reporter

Bus cleaner stabbed to death

KADAPA: A mini-bus cleaner P. Imam Saheb (32) was allegedly stabbed to death by an auto driver Khader Vali in Rayachoti mandal on Tuesday. The murder was a sequel to an altercation on Monday evening, when Imam Saheb objected to Vali abusing women in the street, according to police. Staff Reporter

BSNL road show

MADANAPALLE: The BSNL will conduct a road show on March 22 at Bangalore bus stand and on March 23 at Chittoor bus stand centre. Hunger strike planned

Vizianagaram: Thotapalli project-affected victims launched relay hunger strike under the aegis of CPI(M) at the Naviri toll gate, near Parvathipuram, on Tuesday. On the first day, a large number of people, including sarpanches and ward members of Bantuvanivalasa and Markondaputti villages, participated. Reddy Sri Rama Murty, CPI(M) divisional secretary, said that the relay fast would continue up to March 26. - Correspondent

Suspicious death

Kakinada: A recently-married woman Nethala Mariyamma (20) reportedly committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at her house in Vudimudi Lanka village under P.Gannavaram police station limits on Monday night. Her parents lodged a complaint that she was harassed by her husband and inlaws. - Correspondent

Fatal fall

Kakinada: A toddy tapper, Mattaparti Bhadram (35) was killed on the spot when he slipped down accidentally from the palm tree in the fields of Marripudi village in Rangampet mandal on Tuesday. The Rangampet police registered a case and sent the body for postmortem. Correspondent
