Rights bodies seek parties' stand on `encounters'

Staff Reporter

Police accused of committing cold-blooded murders

ANANTAPUR: Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) and Organisation for People's Democratic Rights (OPDR) have demanded both the Congress and Telugu Desam Party to clarify their stand on the increasing fake encounters in the district and elsewhere.

On the killing of four Maoists, including a dalam commander in the district on March 11, the two rights bodies accused the police of committing cold-blooded murders and not encounter killings as claimed by the police. Further, they alleged that the police have been playing into the hands of factional leaders in the ruling and opposition parties.

A fact-finding committee of the rights bodies visited the encounter site interacting with Chandamuru villagers, revenue officials and doctors of Dharmavaram hospital who had conducted post mortem on March 15. The fact-finding report stated that the police were acting as per the wishes of the factional leaders. Getting political rivals killed in the name of encounters had begun with the killing of Paritala Hari in the 1980s. Paritala Ravi and the police had also formed a killer gang in the name of ROC and got their rivals eliminated.

Routine

The rights bodies alleged that it had become a routine for police to commit murder under the purview of law by acting as per the wishes of parties in power.
