Ananthamurthy to seek Deve Gowda's intervention

Staff Reporter

Wants JD(S) leader to ask MLAs to vote for him in Rajya Sabah polls

Bangalore: The litterateur U.R. Ananthamurthy, who is contesting the Rajya Sabha elections, plans to meet H.D. Deve Gowda and urge him to ask the Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs to vote for him as he has been a steadfast supporter of the Janata Parivar and has even campaigned on its behalf in elections.

Dr. Ananthamurthy told presspersons here on Tuesday said that he also plans to approach Congress President Sonia Gandhi to seek the party's support. He has already spoken to Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mani Shankar Aiyar in this regard, he said. But, he will not be making a similar appeal to BJP President Rajnath Singh. The BJP, he charged, "destroyed the educational and cultural sectors" by placing people from its cadres in important positions to the detriment of minorities and Dalits.

`I have a right'

He said he has a right to seek the votes of the JD(S) since he had offered to contest against the BJP leader H.N. Ananth Kumar for the Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat in 2004. But the JD(S) leaders offered him the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat. He hoped that the JD(S) would not issue a whip to its MLAs to vote for a particular candidate.

Asked what if the JD(S) issues a whip to party MLAs, Dr. Ananthamurthy said then every MLA should defy the whip.

Asked if he was against according classical status to Kannada, Dr. Ananthamurthy said it was unfortunate that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and D. Javare Gowda had made "silly criticisms against me" on the issue. Prof. Javare Gowda was a witness when he demanded classical status for Kannada, at a meeting held in Mysore some time ago.

He claimed he won the first round of the elections with his nomination. Now he has to get the required number of votes to be elected, he added.
